Three months after the backlash, Mass Effect 3 earned an airbrushing in the form of an "Extended Cut," which sanded away some of the chief complaints. Convictions be damned.īioWare would eventually fulfill that pivot. It is a revelatory quote, and initial proof that for as much as this new generation of game studios dreamt of auteur autonomy, the customer was always right.

"Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics-but out of respect for our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility." "It's incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game's endings were not up to their expectations," BioWare co-founder and general manager Ray Muzyka said at the time, as the rancor was picking up.

But in 2012, I'm not sure if anyone fully understood the degree to which fans could influence the properties they love-especially when faced with a plot choice they didn't agree with. Years later, Disney financialized the Marvel brand into a juggernaut, causing every production house on the planet to desperately carve out their own bespoke multiverses worshipped by a global community of enthusiasts. When Shepard chose his path and ignited the internet, geekdom as a unilateral pop cultural force was rounding into form. If that sounds familiar to you, it's because Mass Effect 3 has become the blueprint for all varieties of insurrection. Which is great. It just snowballed like crazy, and pretty soon the whole issue was on fire. They are huge blockbuster games with a deep lore, so you can tell a lot of stories. We will get more Horizon games, just like we will get more Ghost of Tsushima games. Next year it will be all about "Spider-Man 2 looks like DLC" and "Wolverine looks like Ryse."Ī lot of fans out there love HZD and HFW. HFW is an Ubisoft game, so all open-world games should copy Elden Ring now."īlah blah bla. A Guerrilla dev had the audacity to criticize Elden Ring, so Guerrilla and HFW sucks. Bluepoint ruined the Demon's Souls remake. Developers and fans should simply ignore them. So give me more of that.Īnd nobody should care what some toxic butthurt fanboys and haters are saying these days. The main thing of Horizon is fighting machines and the story. More biomes but slightly different is fine. Meanwhile Nemesis is more powerful and (I guess) just here for destruction. Their goal here was just to get Gaia and her subordinate functions. The Zeniths were ready to leave earth again. I'll try to jump back into Stray since I pretty much stopped at the beginning of the game. Let's see if any future patches bring me back, but the dev team is absurdly slow at fixing things. If it wasn't a fucking buggy mess of a game that WIPED my 30+ hour save file RIGHT before the end boss, I'd call this one of the better Metroidvanias (if not the best) after Hollow Knight, but now I'm so pissed off at it. I have also been playing Souldiers again after the balance patch. It's essentially a stripped-down mini-Metroidvania that doesn't overstay its welcome, but doesn't offer anything extraordinary. This was a surprisingly fun game, with nice aesthetics and some fun, yet basic, exploration. I also started playing through ANNO: Mutationem since it has been installed on my PS5 for some time.

Obviously liked it well enough to platinum it though (it's not the easiest game to platinum). I'd give it a 6/10 or a weak 7/10 if I'm generous. The big problem is that (1) many maps and locations are reused, (2) the enemy variety is very low, and (3) the level design and gameplay doesn't incentivize using your comprehensive skill set in any way. It's quite a unique topdown immersive sim, but it slightly overextends its stay and runs out of steam well before the ending.
